September 6th through September 9th

This is a 4 day week and I think EVERYONE enjoyed having an extra day to rest.  I suspect some teachers also used this day to catch up in their classrooms! 
We are going to continue to review the alphabet as we learn about our new kiddos.  They seem to know a lot of letters and sounds already.  Thanks to you, parents and Pre-K!! 
We are beginning a unit titled All About Me.  We will be talking about taking care of our bodies and choosing healthy foods.  We will learn about our 5 senses.  We will celebrate who we are!
This first six weeks is spent learning about the numbers 1-5 for math.  There are a lot of songs and books and games to play to teach our kinders these numbers!
Our new teacher, Mrs. Shelton, is getting used to us and she is excited about being at Ortiz.  We all have about 22 children now and they are getting in the routine of school and learning what it means to be a ROCK STAR Allstar!

Why a gingerbread man cannot swim across the river......

Our science experiment today consisted of dissolving our gingerbread man in a bucket of water.  After reading many versions of the gingerbread man and girl, we decided to see what really would happen if he had tried to swim across the river by himself.  The end result was not good....poor gingerbread man.

Mrs. Jordan's class colored gingerbread houses for all of our little gingerbread men to live in.  Mrs. Cargile's class can already "read" a chart poem after only 9 days of school and you can see Mrs. Voss has lots of boys and girls in her class.  She has the largest class with 23 children!  Mrs. Alkire's class painted gingerbread men during art class!

Literacy Tubs

We just developed literacy tubs this summer.  A group of Kinder teachers met and planned a way to put together a group of literacy tubs that would be shared with the grade level.  We would only have 4 tubs each week and then rotate and get 4 new ones for the next week.  By sharing, we are saving the time that each one of us would have spent developing and using these stations.  So far, the kinders love "playing" with them.
